WASHINGTON — In a weekend that has seen global energy markets reel and diplomatic channels fray to the breaking point, President Donald Trump has issued his most explicit military threat to date. In a profanity-laced post on Truth Social on Sunday, the President declared a self-imposed deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, or face the systematic destruction of its national infrastructure.
The post, which quickly went viral, utilized the President’s trademark branding of major events, framing a potential military strike as a scheduled operation.
"Power Plant Day and Bridge Day"
Writing from the White House, President Trump warned that the United States would no longer tolerate the closure of the world’s most critical oil chokepoint, which has been effectively blocked since late February following the outbreak of hostilities between the U.S.-Israeli coalition and Tehran
"Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!!" the President wrote. "Open the Fin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell — JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah."
In a subsequent clarification, the White House confirmed the deadline is set for 8:00 PM Eastern Time on Tuesday. The "Praise be to Allah" sign-off, widely viewed by analysts as a sarcastic jab at the Iranian leadership, has further inflamed tensions in the region.
The Economic Stakes
The Strait of Hormuz is responsible for the passage of approximately 20% of the world’s global oil supply. Since the blockade began, gas prices in the United States have skyrocketed, and global energy shortages have triggered emergency rationing in several European nations.
While the President has issued—and subsequently extended—similar deadlines over the past three weeks citing "progress in negotiations," this latest rhetoric suggests a shift toward a "scorched earth" military phase.
